At the Forest School Association (FSA), we listen to our members to understand what matters most to you. Recently, we conducted a survey to hear directly from current members, and also lapsed members and non-members, about their experiences and the value they find in FSA membership. The results have been both affirming and enlightening, and we’re pleased to share some highlights with you.

A Trusted Professional Community

One of the key themes that emerged from the survey was the value members place on being part of a supportive and professional network. Many respondents shared that the sense of belonging to a community of like-minded practitioners is invaluable.  Members value the FSA’s commitment to professionalising Forest School practices and promoting standards that uphold Forest School’s ethos.

“FSA membership connects me with a network of passionate individuals who truly understand the principles and magic of Forest School.”

Through our events, online forums, and Local Groups, members have built relationships that support their personal and professional growth.

Resources and Support to Build Confidence

FSA members highlighted the practical resources they receive as a significant benefit of membership. These tools—such as guidance notes, webinars, and our annual conference—are specifically designed to empower practitioners in their daily work. Members shared that these resources reduce the feeling of isolation by providing tangible solutions and professional reassurance.

“The resources from the FSA are my go-to for reassurance and inspiration. Knowing I’m working to a recognised standard gives me confidence in my practice.”

By equipping members with high-quality materials and opportunities for skill development, the FSA helps build the confidence needed to deliver transformative Forest School experiences.

Advocating for Forest School

Many respondents appreciate the FSA’s role as a national voice for Forest School. Members value our commitment to promoting the ethos of Forest School across the UK and advocating for its recognition.

“The FSA is such a strong advocate for Forest School—it feels like having a champion in your corner. Their work gives me confidence that what we do truly matters.”

Staying Informed

Another key aspect was the importance of staying up-to-date with developments in the Forest School world. Members spoke highly of the FSA’s newsletters, updates, and access to case studies that connect them to broader trends and innovations.

“The FSA keeps me updated on the bigger picture. It helps me stay connected to the wider movement while staying grounded in my own practice.”

Staying informed ensures members feel part of a dynamic, evolving movement while maintaining alignment with Forest School’s ethos. The FSA provides the information and inspiration practitioners need to adapt, grow, and advocate for Forest School in their own settings.

Recognition and Credibility

Finally, many of you told us that being a member of the FSA, and especially being a Recognised Forest School Provider, adds credibility to your work. Parents, schools, and community organisations see FSA membership as a hallmark of quality.

“Being an FSA Recognised Provider has opened doors for me—it’s a mark of trust that others recognise immediately.”

Looking ahead

The results of the survey also highlight that we need to: i) get better at communicating the benefits of FSA membership ii) further empower FSA Local Groups to offer face to face support in the regions iii) create and share even more resources.  The FSA have already begun exploring all three of these areas so watch this space!

Thank You for Sharing

We’re grateful to everyone who participated in the survey. Your feedback will guide us as we continue to develop and enhance the benefits of membership. More importantly, it reaffirms why we do what we do: to support you in bringing the magic of Forest School to life.

Whether you’re a current member or considering joining, the FSA is here to support, inspire, and advocate for you. Together, we can nurture curiosity, courage, and resilience—not just in the children we teach, but in ourselves as practitioners.
