I am 40, married, with a 9 year old daughter. I have been a small business owner/Self-employed since leaving Southbank International School in 1993. I went to college to train as a Farrier in Hereford, where I met my future wife- we have been together 22 years now. I have a background in Retail, Catering, Plumbing and Mechanical Engineering, Arboriculture and Forestry, take a keen interest in all outdoor activities that involve woodlands- forestry, woodland management, firewood, kindling, woodcrafts, timber milling, chainsaw carving. I

spend a lot of time in Brecon, where I own a large woodland, and a smallholding. I manage my woodland for firewood production, and produce commercial charcoal, kindling and firewood logs, along with basket willow. I am very passionate about children’s education, having started as a Parent Governor at my daughters school, I then went on to become the Chair of Governors. During my Governorship, I particularly supported NQT’s, offering advice and the opportunity to provide children with bespoke woodcraft workshops. I strived to involve children more deeply in woodcraft and outdoor enrichment- taking several sheep to school in the back of my truck on one occasion! I like to spend as much time outside as possible, where I delight in being in the woods. I find that carving, woodcrafts, spinning, felting, crafting and being at one with nature helps to heal the soul. I know firsthand how empowering nature can be, and how embracing the woodland life has helped me to cope with Arthritis and back pain that I have suffered daily since early childhood- it was primarily this reason that set me on the road to woodland ownership- which I wholeheartedly recommend!

I love to be out in the woods, and teaching children, empowering them to discover the world around them and to cherish it, care for it, nurture it. I think I have the dedication, passion and belief that the Forest School Association, as the National Body for Forest School in the Country needs- to continue to grow its membership and become the strong, supportive, representative body that the members ask, and that the country needs. I know I can bring my dedication and passion, along with the relevant and recent experiences that I cherish from my training, my woodland management and woodcraft experience and use  them for the benefit of members and ultimately I hope for the benefit of all those who come to learn at Forest  School countrywide.

Your Forest School experience (and this is not necessarily a pre requisite but you will need to have some basic working knowledge of Forest School)
I have involved myself very heavily in all things Forest School, for several years. I began training last year, and very quickly decided that being a Forest School Leader was the missing link- something that I have been searching for the majority of my life. I have organised workshops for children, run on a Forest School ethos basis, but organised as Outdoor  Learning for several years now. I have used the Forest School approach whilst running my woodcrafts workshops. I am founding Vice-Chair of the FSA Kent & Medway Local Group- and support FS throughout the County of Kent. I take a keen interest in CPD, and all things Forest School. I have setup several facebook groups, a dedicated Level 2 Assistant support group, and regularly contribute to discussions- particularly helping trainees. I am in the process of setting up two woodlands
for our company Forest School site- with a third in the pipeline. I have already mentored several L3 trainees and I am looking to offer L2 mentoring for students in Kent.

How you personally can benefit the FSA.
Having been a Chair of Governors, I understand how committees work. I understand the process of decision making, and how vital it is that everyone on a committee provides support and plays their part- working together to achieve a common goal. As Vice-Chair of the Kent & Medway, I would also bring local contacts and links to organisations within the
County.
As a freelance practitioner, with both a Forest School Limited Company, and a Forest School Community Interest Company
– I am not tied to any one organisation, and so can represent the interests of freelance practitioners and trainers. I work very
closely with several local schools, and have good working relationships with many Ashford Teachers and Headteachers.

Please declare any special interests or affiliations with other organisations in the Forest School sector including  commercial, public sector or voluntary.
I am a director of Wye Community Farm, a cooperative farming project in Wye, Ashford.
I am founding Vice-Chair of the FSA Kent & Medway local group.
