24th June 2020, ‘Around the Hearth’ 8 – 9.30 pm

This ‘Around the Hearth Webinar’, is a discussion-based webinar prompted by a short input from an experienced practitioner/expert, followed by a discussion of the topic of the webinar in breakout rooms.

The webinar will examine the current state of sites with the lockdown. Using a couple of sites as examples Jen will highlight the ways the sites have developed this year and informed a new view of each site and it’s management. We will be introduced into some new ways of looking at ecological impact assessments, incorporating monitoring for tree diseases and working with leaf herbivores!  She will also be showing the new improved MyForest for education, to get a feel for it before the webinar go to https://myforest.sylva.org.uk/education-guidance

We will be breaking into discussion groups to share thoughts on caring for our site in lockdown and post-lockdown times when the human community returns.

The questions that Jen will pose for us as practitioners will include;

How do we involve our learners more in management planning and caring for our sites?

How do we minimize impact and maintain the balance of educational value and wildness/biodiversity that may well have increased with the ‘COVID rest’?

Jen Hurst is Head of Forest Education for Sylva see www.sylva.org.uk and has been the coordinator for the Forest Education Network, now the Forest Education Network England.

Elsa Field is a PHd forest ecologist, plant health expert and specialising in leaf herbivores…who are very cute critters!

At the end of all our webinars, there is an opportunity to join a 25-minute community share at the end of the main webinar or to continue discussions/questions around the topic of mindfulness.  If you decide to join the community share session you can bring along any positive things that are current for you that relate to FS or keeping you connected with your learners and the natural world – these could be a good news story or a new resource or you could share some reading you have had recently been doing, recite a poem…anything…or you can just sit back a listen to what others of like mind have brought to share.
